LOSING ITS LUSTER

Unfortunately, after 140 years in the extreme weather conditions of Virginia City, this historically and architecturally significant church is showing its age and needs to be restored. Wooden walls exposed to almost a century and a half of sun, snow and wind are dried out, rotting away, and warped. They can no longer support the window sets, which are at risk for failing. The roof beams are warped and unstable. Heat and electrical systems are archaic and might easily set the tinder-dry building aflame again. We must act now, or lose this beautiful and historic building forever.

Update on work completed and future projects

  • With grant funding from the National Park Service "Save America's Treasures", the foundation on the west side/front of the church building was stabilized in 2023.

  • With grant funding from the State Historic Preservation Office/Commission for Cultural Centers and Historic Preservation, the south and west outside of the church was repaired and painted in 2025. The stained glass windows on the south side were repaired.

  • In 2026, St. Paul the Prospector will be applying for additional funding from the State Historic Preservation Office to:

  1. Replace the aging roof and update the electrical system.
  2. Repair the foundation on the east/back of the church. Replace the existing ramp on the side and back of the church.
  3. Paint and repair the east and north elevations and replace exterior lighting.

We will apply for funding but most likely will not receive the full amount to accomplish all of this. You are welcome to donate to any of these projects.
